WISDOM TOOTH INFECTION: WHAT ARE THE SIGNS & SYMPTOMS?

Posted on

In between YOUR regular dental visits, it’s important to be aware of the mouth’s signs and symptoms. One of the most common reasons that people make an appointment with an oral surgeon to have their wisdom teeth extracted, usually due to an infection or having impacted wisdom teeth.

Pain is a primary indicator of an infection. This can be localized around the wisdom tooth or teeth, or it could spread to your jaw or entire face. Other symptoms include bleeding or pus from gums around the area as well as bad breath from bacteria buildup.

Here are some wisdom tooth infection symptoms:

**

1. SWELLING AND REDNESS

If your wisdom tooth is infected, the surrounding gum tissue may become swollen, tender, and exhibit a reddish hue.

2. PUS

If you experience pus from your teeth and gums, it is typically a sign of a tooth abscess or a wisdom tooth infection. Pus is a clear sign of infection. The sooner an infection is treated, the lower the risk for complications.

3. BAD BREATH

Despite meticulous oral hygiene, a foul smell emanating from the back of your mouth could be an indicator of an infected wisdom tooth.

4. TOOTHACHES

Persistent Pain, you may notice a throbbing or constant ache in the area where your wisdom tooth is erupting or impacted.

5. UNPLEASANT TASTE

If you’re constantly noticing an unpleasant or metallic taste in your mouth, it could be a result of pus or other oral fluids associated with an infected wisdom tooth.

6. DECAY

Impacted teeth are at a higher risk of developing tooth decay than other teeth because they are harder to clean and trap food and bacteria easily.

7. DIFFICULTY OPENING MOUTH AND SWALLOWING FOOD

Jaw Stiffness, difficulty in opening your mouth fully or experiencing stiffness in your jaw could be a sign of an infected wisdom tooth.

A wisdom tooth infection can make it difficult to open your mouth and swallow food or drinks. For those who end up with a wisdom tooth infection, prompt treatment and care are critical.

Having a toothache can ruin your mood for weeks if left untreated, and a wisdom tooth infection is NO exception. If you need your wisdom teeth removed, remember that it happens to most people. And it is an everyday procedure for an oral maxillofacial surgeon, like Dr. Emmanuel Taylor.
