Tuscarawas Oral Surgery and Implant Center: Dental Implant FAQ

Posted on

Dental implants are an effective solution for replacing missing teeth, for people who have lost one or more teeth due to injury, decay, or periodontal disease. Dental implants are beneficial for a myriad of reasons.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth that are surgically implanted in the jawbone. They are made of titanium. Dental implants consist of three parts: the implant, the abutment, and the crown. Dental implants are a long-lasting solution for missing teeth because they fuse to the jawbone and become a permanent part of the mouth.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most healthy individuals who have lost one or more teeth are good candidates for dental implants. However, some factors may affect eligibility, such as gum disease, smoking, and certain medical conditions. Your dentist will evaluate your oral health and medical history to determine if dental implants suit you.

How Long Does the Dental Implant Process Take?

The dental implant process typically takes several months to complete. The first step is to place the implant into the jawbone, which requires a surgical procedure.

After the implant is placed, the jawbone needs to heal and fuse to the implant in a process called osseointegration. This can take several months.

Once the implant has fused to the bone, a small connector called an abutment is attached to the implant. Finally, a replacement tooth is attached to the abutment.

Is the Dental Implant Process Painful?

The dental implant process is typically performed under IV sedation, so you should not feel any pain during the procedure. Most of our patients note that an over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen is more than capable of managing any tenderness you may feel following surgery. It is often reported that our patients find the procedure much less painful than expected.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. However, the longevity of dental implants can depend on several factors, such as oral hygiene, smoking, and the patient’s overall health. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are essential to maintaining the health of dental implants.

How Do I Care for My Dental Implants?

It is similar to caring for natural teeth. You should brush twice daily, floss daily, and use an antimicrobial mouthwash to prevent infection.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer several benefits over other tooth replacement options, such as dentures and bridges. Dental implants are a permanent solution that looks and feels like natural teeth. Dental implants also help preserve the jawbone and prevent bone loss that can occur with missing teeth.
